Range Regional Airport Breaks Down the Real ID Act

Recently, you may have been hearing a lot about the Real ID Act and how it's affecting air travel throughout the United States. Since there are a lot of details involving the legislation, understanding it can be a bit confusing without some outside help.

At Range Regional Airport, we're often asked how the Real ID Act will affect the passengers who fly with us, so we've collected some information for you below.

What Exactly is the Real ID Act?

If you've been noticing some signs at your local airport that ID requirements are changing, don't be alarmed. The Real ID Act, passed in 2005 in the wake of the September 11 attacks, is an effort to set specific standards for the issuance of sources of identification, according to the Department of Homeland Security's website.

The legislation prohibits certain agencies (airports, nuclear power plants, federal facilities) from accepting driver's licenses and ID cards issued from states not meeting the proper standards outlined in the Real ID Act. To remain in compliance with the law, state agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles are required to verify proof of residency and Social Security information when issuing IDs.

How Does this Affect Minnesota Flyers?

For all those traveling from Range Regional Airport or any other airport, as of October 1, 2018, the state of Minnesota has begun issuing Real ID Act-compliant licenses. With the launch of the new driver's license system, Minnesotans now have the option to apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID card. You can also visit your local Department of Motor Vehicle office prior to your license needing to be renewed.  In either case, proper documents, such as your birth certificate or passport are required.  Can You Still Travel Without a Real ID?

Minnesotans who have not obtained a Real ID or updated driver's license can still travel internationally or domestically by using their passport or passport card until October 1, 2020.  After that date, a REAL ID, Enhanced driver's license or ID or passport will be required for those wanting to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities. https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/real-id/Pages/default.aspx
